What it does
Access, in detail.
Control who can read what, and collect what you are owed, whether your journal is open access, subscription-based or something in between.
- 01
Flexible access rules
Open access, delayed open access, subscription, pay-per-article and embargoes, set per journal, article type or issue.
- 02
Institutional access
Recognise institutions by IP range, single sign-on or proxy, and manage consortia and their members in one place.
- 03
Subscriptions and orders
Subscription products, orders, renewals and invoices for readers and institutions.
- 04
Article processing charges
Collect APCs with waivers, discounts and society-member rates, with a clear record of every exception.
- 05
Payments that work internationally
Card payments through Stripe first, with tax handling and multi-currency support.
- 06
Decisions for other sites
An API answers whether a reader may access an article, so external platforms can rely on the same rules.
How it works
Four steps, no hand-offs lost.
- 1
Define
Set the access rule for each journal, article type or issue.
- 2
Recognise
Add institutions, IP ranges and single sign-on connections.
- 3
Collect
Take subscriptions, orders and article processing charges.
- 4
Enforce
Readers see what they are entitled to, and nothing else.
Standalone by design
Works on its own. Better together.
Access needs nothing else to be useful. It has its own way in and its own way out, and in the full suite the hand-offs are automatic.

Questions
About access.
Can a journal be completely open access?
Yes. Open access is a rule like any other, and journals can also mix open, delayed and subscription content.
Can I give society members a different price?
Yes. Article processing charges support waivers, discounts and member rates, each recorded with a reason.
Can other websites use DiscoverJ access rules?
Yes. The module can return access decisions to external sites through an API, single sign-on or IP check.
